Big Blue Water Filter Housing 20 Inch: Is It Right for You? Check This Out!

Alright, folks, let’s talk about the time I messed around with a big blue water filter housing, the 20-inch kind. I’m no plumber, but I like to get my hands dirty and figure things out. So, here’s how it went down.

First off, I got this big blue housing. It’s a pretty hefty thing, made of this tough, reinforced polypropylene material. I also picked up some 4.5 x 20 water filter cartridges – the standard size, apparently. This is for our home water filter, just to give you some context.

Now, the goal was to set this up as a pre-filtration system. We have both city and well water where I live. The water’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. I figured a good filter would make a noticeable difference. Plus, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on what you’re drinking, right?

The installation process was… well, it was a learning experience. The housing has a 1-inch NPT port, which I guess is standard for these things. Connecting it wasn’t as straightforward as I’d hoped. I had to fiddle around with some pipes and fittings to get everything snug and leak-free.

  • Got the big blue housing.
  • Picked up some standard size filter cartridges.
  • Wrestled with pipes and fittings.

One thing I appreciated about this housing is that it has a shut-off valve. That made it super easy to change the filter cartridges without making a huge mess. Also, part of the housing is clear, so you can actually see the filter and know when it’s time to swap it out. Pretty neat, huh?

The Aftermath

After a bit of trial and error, I finally got the whole thing up and running. And I gotta say, the difference in water quality is pretty clear. It just tastes better, and I feel better knowing that we’re filtering out some of the gunk before it gets to our taps.

I also learned that this type of housing is often used for rainwater collection systems. I don’t do that, but it’s good to know it’s versatile. It’s apparently called a “full flow” or “big blue” system, designed for standard filter cartridges. It also has a pressure relief button, which I haven’t had to use yet, but it’s there if I need it.

So, that’s my little adventure with the big blue water filter housing. It wasn’t the smoothest ride, but I got there in the end. And hey, now I know a bit more about home water filtration. Not too shabby for a regular guy who likes to tinker, right? Now we are enjoying the clean water and I feel really good about what I did, even though it took me a whole afternoon.
