Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to get a better water filter for my place, and I finally went with the Pentair Big Blue 1 inch NPT. Let me tell you, this thing is hefty! I saw it online, and it looked solid, but when I got it, I realized it’s a serious piece of equipment.

Getting Started

First off, I gotta say, finding this thing wasn’t too hard. I saw a bunch of online shops with it, and some even had free shipping, which is always a plus. I went for a new one, though I saw some used ones listed too. Didn’t want to risk it with something as important as a water filter, you know?

When the package arrived, it was a big box, and inside was the filter housing itself, some paperwork, and that was about it. No frills, just the filter. This one is the 20-inch model, which is pretty big. I made sure to double-check that I got the right size, cause they have different ones. Mine has a 1-inch NPT connection, which is apparently a standard size for a lot of homes.

The Install

Now, I’m no plumber, but I’m pretty handy. Still, I watched a couple of videos online before tackling this. The filter housing is heavy-duty, made of this tough polypropylene, they call it. It feels really durable, not like some of those flimsy plastic ones. This one has a pressure relief button, which is good for letting out air when you change the filter. It uses something they call “High-Flow Polypropylene,” or HFPP, for the cap, it is supposed to handle high water flow without slowing things down.

Installing it wasn’t a walk in the park. I had to shut off the main water, obviously. Then it was a matter of fitting it into my existing pipes. I used some pipe thread tape to make sure there were no leaks around the connections. It took some elbow grease, but I got it all hooked up. I also had to get a filter cartridge separately, it’s not included. I picked one that filters out sediment and stuff, but there are different types you can get, depending on what you need. I think I saw some people online use this for a two-stage filtration by adding another set of housings with it.

The Results

After I turned the water back on, I ran it for a few minutes to flush out any air and check for leaks. Thankfully, no leaks! The water pressure seemed good, didn’t notice any drop. It’s still early, but the water does taste better. I’m hoping this thing will last me a while because it definitely seems like it’s built to last. I just needed to do some basic installation and then it worked just as I expected!
