Is Reverse Osmosis Better? Reverse Osmosis Water vs Filtered Water Explained

Is Reverse Osmosis Better?Okay, here’s my experience comparing reverse osmosis water and filtered water:

So, I’ve been thinking a lot about the water I drink. You know, trying to be healthy and all that. I kept seeing “reverse osmosis” and “filtered” water, and honestly, I wasn’t sure what the big difference was. So, I decided to do a little experiment.

My Water Experiment

First, I grabbed a regular old pitcher-style water filter. You know, the kind you fill up and stick in the fridge. I’ve used these for years, mostly to get rid of that chlorine taste from the tap water.

Then, I went all-in and got a reverse osmosis (RO) system installed under my sink. It was a bit of a pain to set up, I’m not gonna lie. Lots of tubes and connections. But hey, I was committed!

The Taste Test

Okay, time for the real test. I poured myself a glass of water from the filtered pitcher and another from the new RO system. I took a sip of the filtered water first. It was…fine. Like I said, it gets rid of the chlorine, which is a big win. But it still tasted, well, like tap water, just a little cleaner.

Then, I tried the RO water. Woah. Seriously, it was different. It tasted… I don’t know… pure. Like, there was almost no taste at all. It was super smooth and clean. It was surprising!

Checking the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)

I felt like I needed some actual proof, not just my taste buds. I remembered some folks talking about TDS, so I got a cheap TDS meter. It’s a little gadget that supposedly tells you how much “stuff” is dissolved in your water.

  • Tap Water: The meter showed a pretty high number. Made sense.
  • Filtered Water: The number went down a bit, but it was still pretty high.
  • Reverse Osmosis Water: The number was way lower. Like, a huge difference.

The Verdict

After all this, I’m sticking with the RO water. That taste difference was real, and the TDS meter reading confirmed it. The RO system removes way more stuff than the simple filter. It’s a bit more of an investment upfront, and the installation was a bit annoying, but for me, it’s worth it. I really like the taste, and it just feels cleaner. My simple filter will collect dust. I realized it just changes the tap water taste.
