I did some digging and realized it was probably hard water, and that got me down a rabbit hole of water filtration systems and water softeners.

First of all, I tried to figure out exactly what was in my water. Subsequently, I got one of those DIY test kits – you know, the ones with the little strips you dip in? Unsurprisingly, it showed high levels of hardness, which I guess means lots of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Consequently, that explained the crusty stuff on my showerhead and the weird film on my dishes.

Then I started researching the difference between a filtration system and a softener. It seemed like a filtration system was more about getting rid of actual contaminants – things like chlorine, sediment, and maybe even some bacteria. On the other hand, people specifically focused a water softener on tackling those hardness minerals.

Did I need both? Just one? I spent hours reading reviews and watching videos. Some people swore by whole-house filtration systems, saying they improved the taste and smell of their water dramatically. Others said a water softener was the only way to truly deal with hard water problems and protect their pipes and appliances.

Ultimately, because my main immediate concern was the hard water buildup, I decided to go with a water softener first. I found a local company that installed one for a reasonable price, and, man, what a difference! No more crusty faucets, and my dishes actually looked clean after washing. My skin even felt less dry after showering!

• The installation process was fairly straightforward.
• They put the softener unit in my basement, near the main water line.
• Basically, people fill a big tank with these little resin beads.
• The hard water flows through the beads, and some kind of magic happens (ion exchange, I think they called it?) that swaps out the calcium and magnesium for sodium.
• I have it set to automatic mode.

I’m still thinking about adding a filtration system later on, maybe a simple under-sink one for my drinking water. But for now, the water softener has made a huge improvement in my day-to-day life. No more scrubbing at scale buildup – that’s a win in my book!
