Big Blue Sediment Filter 20 Review: How Well Does It Really Work to Remove Dirt and Debris?

Okay, so, I’ve been dealing with some nasty water at my place. I mean, the water looked kinda murky, and I was worried about what it might be doing to my appliances and stuff. So, I decided it was time to get a serious water filter. After looking around a bit, I went for this “big blue” sediment filter, the 20-inch one. Figured it might be good to share how it went, since I couldn’t find much out there when I was researching.

First off, I had to get all the parts. Besides the filter housing itself, which is this big blue cylinder thing, I got a couple of those Pentek DGD-5005-20 filter cartridges. They’re supposed to be good at catching all sorts of sediment. I also grabbed some tools, some plumbing tape, and made sure I had enough space where I planned to install it, which was right after the main water line coming into my house.

Installation time! I’m not exactly a DIY expert, but I’m not totally useless either. First thing, I shut off the main water supply. Didn’t want any surprise showers. Then, I cut into the main line where this bad boy was going to live. I used some plumbing tape on the threads of the filter housing to make sure everything was nice and watertight.

Next, I mounted the filter housing on the wall. It’s pretty heavy, so you gotta make sure it’s secure. Once that was up, I popped one of those Pentek cartridges into the housing. It slid in pretty easily. Then, it was just a matter of connecting the housing to the pipes I had cut earlier. Tightened everything up, crossed my fingers, and turned the water back on.

I gotta say, I was pretty impressed. The water pressure seemed fine, and I let it run for a few minutes like the instructions said. At first, there were some air bubbles and a bit of cloudy water, probably just from the new filter. But then, it cleared right up. And let me tell you, the water looks so much better now. It’s clear, doesn’t have that weird sediment look anymore.

Here’s what I used:

  • Pentek Big Blue 20-inch Filter Housing
  • Pentek DGD-5005-20 Filter Cartridges
  • Plumbing tools like pipe cutters and wrench.
  • Plumbing tape
  • Mounting bracket and screws

My Thoughts

I’ve had this thing running for a while now, and I’m pretty happy with it. My water tastes better, looks better, and I feel a lot better knowing that all that sediment isn’t gunking up my pipes and appliances. I even checked, those Pentek cartridges are supposed to last a while before I need to change them, which is good.

If you’re dealing with sediment in your water, I’d definitely recommend looking into one of these big blue filters. It’s a bit of work to install, but totally worth it in my opinion. Just make sure you get the right size filter for your house and some good quality cartridges.

So, this was my journey into water filtration. Hope this was helpful to someone out there! I am not a water expert, but I wanted to improve my water quality and this setup is working for me!
