Changing Pentair Big Blue Filter: Is It Difficult? Lets Find Out

Okay, here’s my blog about changing that Pentair Big Blue filter.

So, the water softener is pretty new, just about a year old. But you know how it is, time to swap out that filter. We’ve got this Hellenbrand Promate Ecomax thing, and it’s got the Pentair Big Blue whole house filter. Oh boy, was it a journey.

Getting Started

First things first, I turned off the main water supply. Gotta make sure nothing’s flowing while you’re messing around with the pipes. Then I found the pressure release button on top of the filter housing and pressed it. You hear this hissing sound, that’s just the pressure getting out.

Taking off the Old Filter

This part was a bit tricky, at least for me. I grabbed the filter housing – that big blue thing – and tried to twist it off. It’s supposed to go counterclockwise. Man, it was stuck! Took some serious elbow grease, but finally, I got it loose. Once it’s turning, you just keep twisting until it comes all the way off. Pulled that old, gunky filter cartridge right out.

Putting in the New Filter

Putting the new one in was way easier. I unwrapped the new filter cartridge, and you’ll see these little lugs or tabs on it. They’ve gotta line up with some notches inside the filter head. I found some label that guided me to align the new one.

So, I carefully lined everything up and just pushed the new cartridge up into the head. Then, put the housing back on, twisting it clockwise this time. You want to make sure it’s snug, but don’t go crazy tightening it.

Finishing Up

With the new filter in place, I slowly turned the water back on. Checked for any leaks around the housing, and thankfully, there were none. The water pressure built back up, and that was that!

I know filter life can vary. It really depends on the kind of filter you’re using and how your water is. Pentair’s manual does mention that changes in taste might happen. But hey, it is what it is. The job’s done, and now we’ve got clean water again.

Honestly, doing stuff like this myself is kinda satisfying. It’s not always easy, but you learn something new, you know? Plus, it saves you a few bucks from calling a pro. This is totally unlike most videos I have seen.

Hope this little walkthrough helps some of you out there. Remember, I’m no expert, just a regular guy figuring things out as I go!
