culligan big blue filter Where to buy? Check out these options!
Okay, so I’ve been messing around with home water stuff for a while now, and let me tell you, it’s a rabbit hole. But a good one! Recently, I decided to upgrade my whole house filter system and went with the Culligan Big Blue filter. I thought I’d share my experience, ’cause when I was researching, I found a whole bunch of information, but not a lot of personal stories.
First off, why did I even bother? Well, our water isn’t terrible, but it’s got that chlorine smell and sometimes tastes a bit off. Plus, we live in an older house, and I figure those pipes have seen better days. So, I wanted something that would just clean things up a bit, you know? Make the water nicer for drinking, showering, everything. After reading a whole lot of information, I decided to go to the Home Depot. They have many brands of filters, including Culligan.
I picked up the Culligan Big Blue filter housing. It’s this big blue cylinder, looks pretty heavy-duty. It’s pretty big, about 10 x 4.5 inches, I believe. You can also find them at any Culligan dealer, but I wanted to do everything by myself. Then came the filter cartridge. That’s where it gets a bit more complicated. Culligan makes a bunch of different ones, each designed to target specific things. It’s wild, they have filters to remove heavy metals, chlorine, sediment, everything you can imagine. I finally decided on a 25 micron filter to reduce chlorine and bad taste. I also got a sediment filter, to remove the sand, dirt and rust, for my peace of mind. The guy at the store said each filter should last me about three months, which seemed pretty good to me.
Installation was next. Now, I’m not a plumber, but I’m pretty handy. I called a plumber friend to help me. Turned off the main water line, relieved the pressure, and then it was time to cut into the pipe. We installed the filter housing after the main water shut-off valve so it would filter all the water coming into the house. It was actually pretty straightforward. We used some plumber’s tape on the threads to make sure there weren’t any leaks, and that was that.
Once everything was hooked up, I slowly turned the water back on, held my breath, and… no leaks! Success! The water pressure seemed fine, which was a relief. I ran the water for a few minutes to flush out any air or loose stuff from the new filter.
So, the big question: does it work? Honestly, yeah! The difference is noticeable. The chlorine smell is completely gone, and the water just tastes cleaner, fresher. Even the showers feel a bit nicer, which is a bonus I wasn’t really expecting.
- Water Taste: Way better. No more chlorine taste.
- Water Smell: No more chlorine smell, which is huge.
- Installation: Not too bad if you’re handy, or if you have a handy friend.
- Maintenance: Replacing the filters every three months seems easy enough.
Overall, I’m super happy with the Culligan Big Blue filter. It’s one of those things that you don’t realize how much you needed it until you have it. If you’re thinking about upgrading your home water filtration, I’d definitely recommend checking it out. It’s an investment, for sure, but for me, it’s been worth it.
Oh, and one last thing – they have a website where you can find your local Culligan dealer if you need their services, like water testing and stuff. I didn’t need it, but it’s good to know it’s there.
