Dirty RO Membrane? How to Clean RO Membrane With Chemicals Now!

Okay, so I had this RO membrane system at home, and let me tell you, it was a lifesaver for getting clean water. But, like all things, it started getting a bit gunky over time. So, I decided it was time to roll up my sleeves and give it a good cleaning using some chemicals.

First off, I gathered my stuff. I needed some cleaning chemicals, specifically alkaline and acidic ones, as I heard those are the best for this job. And, of course, I needed some clean water, the kind that’s already been through the RO system or deionized water. Safety first! I put on some gloves and eye protection cause this is a serious cleaning.

Preparation for Cleaning

  • I shut down the system. Can’t clean it while it’s running, right? Then, I found the cleaning tank and filled it up with the clean water.
  • Next up, I got the agitator going. You know, the thing that mixes the water. You could also use a recirculation pump if you’ve got one. I slowly poured in the alkaline cleaning solution. I made sure to add just the right amount, following the instructions on the bottle. You don’t want to mess this up.
  • After that, I let it mix for a while, making sure it was all dissolved and blended nicely.

Starting the Cleaning Process

Alright, with the alkaline solution ready, I started the cleaning. I let the solution circulate through the membrane, giving it a good soak. This step is supposed to loosen up all the organic gunk that’s stuck in there. I let it run for a good hour or so, just to be sure.

  • Once the alkaline cleaning was done, I rinsed the whole system with clean water. Got to get rid of all that alkaline solution, you know?
  • Then, I repeated the whole process but with the acidic cleaning solution this time. Filled up the tank, mixed the solution, and let it circulate. The acidic cleaner is for tackling the mineral deposits and stuff.
  • After another hour or so, I rinsed the system again with clean water. This is super important, making sure all the chemicals are gone.

Finishing Up

Finally, with all the cleaning done, I put the system back together and turned it back on. I ran some water through it and tested it to make sure everything was working right. And guess what? The water tasted way better, and the flow rate improved like crazy! It was totally worth the effort.

So, there you have it. That’s how I cleaned my RO membrane with chemicals. It might seem like a lot of work, but trust me, it’s not that bad. And keeping your RO system clean is super important for getting the best quality water. Plus, it makes the system last longer, saving you money in the long run. Just follow the steps, be careful with the chemicals, and you’ll be good to go!
