DIY Pool Cartridge Filter Cleaner: Save Money and Clean Like a Pro!

Okay, here is a blog post about cleaning a pool cartridge filter, written in a conversational and informal style:

Alright, folks, let’s talk about something that’s not super glamorous but totally necessary if you’ve got a pool – cleaning that cartridge filter. I put this off way too long this year, and let me tell you, my pool started looking a little… funky. So, I finally decided to do it, get down and dirty, and here’s how it went.

Getting Started

First things first, I turned off the pump. You don’t want that thing running while you’re messing around with the filter. Safety first, you know? Then, I located the air relief valve on top of the filter tank and opened it up. This helps release any built-up pressure inside. I also released the clamps and took off the top part of the filter tank.

The Dirty Work

Next, I pulled out the cartridge. And wow, was it gross! Covered in all sorts of gunk, leaves, and who knows what else. I made a decision to clean them one by one. So, I grabbed my garden hose and started spraying. I’ve found that just a regular nozzle works pretty well. You want to spray at an angle, getting into all those pleats in the filter, making sure to blast away all that trapped dirt. I kept rinsing until the water ran clear. It took a while, and I got soaked, but it had to be done. I did this for each of them, one by one.

Putting It All Back Together

Once the cartridges were sparkling clean, I put them back in the filter tank. I made sure everything was lined up properly and then put the top of the tank back on, tightening those clamps securely. Don’t forget to close the air relief valve once you’re done.

  • I turned the pump back on.
  • I waited until water started coming out of the air relief valve, closed it.
  • I double-checked for leaks.

The Results

And that’s it! My pool is now crystal clear again. It’s amazing what a difference a clean filter can make. It’s not the most fun chore, but it’s definitely worth the effort. I was glad I got it done. It’s such a simple job to do. So, if your pool is looking a little cloudy, don’t wait – go clean that filter! You can totally do it yourself.
