How Long RO Membrane Last Usually? Tips to Make It Last Longer!
So, I’ve been messing around with this whole reverse osmosis system for my home water. It’s been a while now, and the other day I started thinking, “How long does this RO membrane thing actually last?” I mean, I put the darn thing in and kinda forgot about it.
I did some digging around, asked a few buddies who are also into this water-purifying stuff. Turns out, these membranes don’t last forever. Who would have thought, right?
- First off, I checked when I installed mine. It was, like, three years ago. Time flies when you’re having…clean water, I guess?
- Then, I started checking the water quality. I got one of those little tester doohickeys. The readings were still pretty good, but not as amazing as when I first got the system. That got me thinking, maybe the membrane was getting a little worn out.
- Next, I started noticing that the water flow was a bit slower. It used to be a nice steady stream, but now it was more of a trickle. Not a huge deal, but it was taking longer to fill up my water bottle.
- Finally I look around on the internet. Most said a RO membranes should last like 2 to 5 years, I am in the middle of that range!
Based on all that, I figured it was probably time to swap out the membrane. I ordered a new one, watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to replace it (pretty easy, actually), and popped the new one in.
Boom! Water pressure is back to normal, the tester thingy is showing super low numbers again, and I feel good knowing I’m drinking clean water.
My takeaway?
These RO membranes are great, but you gotta keep an eye on them. Don’t just install it and forget it like I did. Check your water quality every now and then, pay attention to the flow, and if things seem off, it might be time for a new one. It’s not rocket science, just a little bit of paying attention can save you some headaches down the road. Now I mark on my calendar, that I should change my RO membrane every 24 months. Keep it safe!
