How Often Should You Change Your RO Membrane? Heres What You Need to Know About RO Membrane Change Frequency

Okay, so, my RO membrane, you know, the thing that makes water all clean and stuff, it was time to change it. I think I did it like, last year, but, uh, the water started tasting kinda funny again, so, yeah, time for a new one.

First, I turned off the water to the whole system. There’s this little valve under my sink, easy peasy. Then I got all the old water out of the tank. Just opened the faucet on my sink until nothing came out anymore.

  • Unscrewed the housing thingy that holds the membrane. It’s this big plastic tube-looking thing.
  • Pulled out the old membrane. It was kinda slimy, gross.
  • Gave the inside of the housing a quick rinse with some water. Didn’t use any soap or anything, just water.
  • Popped in the new membrane. There’s like, an arrow or something that shows which way it goes. Pretty hard to mess up.
  • Screwed the housing back on. Made sure it was tight so it wouldn’t leak.

After that, I turned the water back on and let the tank fill up. It took a while, maybe a couple of hours. I checked it once to see the tank is filled.

Then I just ran the water for a bit, like, 5-10 minutes, to flush out any weird stuff from the new membrane. And that’s it! Water tastes great again. Not bad for an afternoon, right?

It’s not that hard to do this yourself, to be honest. Saves you some money, and you know it’s done right. I usually change those other filters, the ones that stand up, every six months or so. But the membrane, it’s good for like, one to five years, I think. Just depends on how nasty your water is, I guess.

I mean, I watched a few videos online first before I tried it myself the first time. But it’s really not rocket science. Just make sure you turn off the water first, or you’ll have a big mess!

I remember the first time, I was a little nervous, but after seeing how easy it was, now I don’t think twice about it. I even helped my neighbor do hers a while back. It’s good to know this stuff, you know? Saves money and makes you feel all handy and stuff.

Oh, and one more thing, sometimes, the system makes less water than usual. That’s a sign that the membrane might need changing too. I learned that the hard way once. But now I’m on top of it. I write down the dates and everything.

Anyway, that’s my story about changing my RO membrane. Hope it helps someone out there. It is not hard to replace the membrane on your own. But remember to buy a new one first! If you have questions, just ask me.
