How To Check RO Membrane Is Working Or Not? 3 Easy Steps To Know The Results

Okay, so the other day, I got to thinking about my RO system at home. It’s been a while, and I was like, “Is this thing even working right?” So I decided to check the RO membrane. Figured I’d share how I went about it, might be useful for someone else.

First off, I looked at the membrane itself. I mean, it’s supposed to be filtering water, so if it’s all discolored and nasty, that’s a bad sign. Mine looked okay, not too bad, so I moved on.

Next, I remembered something about a pressure gauge. I found it and checked the reading. If it’s low, that could mean the membrane’s not doing its job. Mine was within the normal range, so that wasn’t it either.

Then I thought, “What if I could test the water quality?” I remembered reading something about a TDS meter. I didn’t have one, but it sounded like a good way to check if the membrane’s filtering properly. The idea is, you test the tap water and the filtered water. If the filtered water still has a lot of dissolved stuff, the membrane’s probably shot.

  • Looked at the membrane for discoloration.
  • Checked the pressure gauge for low readings.
  • Thought about using a TDS meter to test water quality.

I did a bit more digging and found out that if the RO system just stops making water, or the flow is way weaker than before, that’s another big clue. Mine was still making water, but the flow did seem a bit slow.

I decided to get a TDS meter and use it. I bought it from the market and used it.

The results from TDS meter told me that RO membrane is working fine.

So, I learned a few ways to check if your RO membrane is working. It wasn’t too hard, just had to poke around a bit and learn what to look for. Hope this helps someone out there!
