Is the culligan big blue 20 inch water filter right for you? Get the lowdown on this popular choice!
Okay, so I finally got around to installing that Culligan Big Blue 20-inch water filter. I’d been putting it off for weeks, but with the water tasting a bit off lately, I figured it was time to bite the bullet.
First off, let me tell you, this thing is massive! I mean, I knew it was going to be big, hence the name “Big Blue,” but seeing it in person was a whole other story. It took me a good minute just to figure out where I was going to put it. I ended up clearing out some space in my basement, right next to the main water line.
Next up, I read the instructions that came with it. Honestly, they were pretty simple, like 3 main steps. They did use some fancy words, so I had to double-check what they meant. I went ahead and watched a couple of YouTube videos too, just to make sure I was doing things right. Seeing someone else do it first always makes me feel a bit more confident, you know?
After that, it was time to get my hands dirty. I turned off the main water supply to the house – wouldn’t want any unexpected showers! Then, using a wrench, I started to disconnect the old pipes. I made sure I had a bucket handy to catch any water that was still in the lines. Luckily my toolset has a pipe cutter, so I cut the pipes as the instructions recommended, and assembled the fittings, which was not hard at all. Once I got the old setup out of the way, installing the Big Blue was actually pretty straightforward. I just had to connect the inlet and outlet ports to the main line, making sure everything was nice and tight. Oh, and I used some of that plumbing tape on the threads to prevent any leaks.
- Turn off the main water supply.
- Disconnect the old pipes.
- Install the new filter housing.
- Connect the inlet and outlet ports.
- Turn the water back on and check for leaks.
Finally, I turned the water back on, held my breath, and… no leaks! Success! I let the water run for a few minutes, just like the instructions said, to flush out any debris or air that might have gotten trapped in the filter.
My Thoughts After Installation
Honestly, the whole process took me a few hours, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. And you know what? The water already tastes noticeably better. I am feeling pretty good about tackling this project myself. I might even start to feel like a real handyman!
I got this Big Blue because my neighbor suggested I get one, and it seems to be working great. I will check in after a few months and see how it is holding up.
