Learn How to Replace RO Membrane Filter: Your Guide to Quick and Easy Replacement

So, the other day, I noticed the water from our purifier was tasting a bit off. It just wasn’t as crisp and clean as it used to be. That’s when I realized, “Oh crap, it’s probably time to change the RO membrane filter.” It’s one of those things you don’t think about until, well, you have to.

First things first, I turned off the water supply to the system. Safety first, you know? Gotta make sure no water’s flowing while you’re messing around in there. There are many types of membranes, I just picked the 75GPD one this time. Then, I located the RO system itself. Ours is just a series of those filter canisters mounted on the wall where the water lines come into the house. Pretty straightforward, right?

Next, I grabbed the housing wrench that came with the system. If you don’t have one of these, you might be able to use a regular wrench, but the housing wrench makes life a whole lot easier. I used it to unscrew the cap from the membrane housing – you know, the one that holds the actual membrane filter.

Once the cap was off, I pulled out the old membrane. I made sure I payed attention to how it was oriented inside the housing. This is important because you gotta put the new one in the same way. Honestly, the old one was looking pretty nasty. It had all sorts of gunk built up on it. No wonder the water tasted funny! If the membrane’s stuck, you can use some needle-nose pliers to help wiggle it out. Mine came out pretty easily, though.

Then, I took the new RO membrane, which I had already picked up from the store, and carefully inserted it into the housing. I made double sure it was facing the right way. Don’t wanna mess that up! With the new membrane in place, I screwed the cap back on, nice and tight.

Finally, I turned the water supply back on and let the system run for a few minutes. I discarded the first couple of glasses of water, just to flush out any loose particles or anything from the new membrane. And that’s it! The water tastes great again.

Seriously, changing the RO membrane is way easier than it sounds. Anyone can do it. You don’t need to be a plumber or anything. Just follow these simple steps, and you’ll have fresh, clean water in no time. Give it a try!
