Need to Remove Membrane From RO Filter? (A Quick and Easy Guide for Beginners)

Alright, here’s my story about messing with my RO filter, specifically how I took out that membrane thing. This whole thing started ’cause the water was tasting kinda funky, and I figured it was time to check things out under the sink.

First off, I turned off the water supply. No need for a surprise shower, right? Then, I found where the membrane lives, it’s in this housing unit. I got my trusty wrench and unscrewed the cap of the housing. It was a bit snug, but it came off eventually.

Getting to the Membrane

  • Opened up the housing unit.
  • Saw the membrane sitting in there, all rolled up.

Now, getting that membrane out was a bit of a challenge. It was in there pretty tight. I grabbed a pair of pliers – gently, of course, didn’t want to damage anything. I managed to pull the membrane out. It took some wiggling, but I got it.

Inspecting the Old Membrane

With the membrane out, I took a good look at it. It definitely looked like it had seen better days. I read somewhere that these things are the main part of the system that gets rid of all the bad stuff in the water, so it made sense why it was so dirty.

I remembered reading a guide or something about replacing these. I think it said to do it every year or so. And there was something about flushing the system with a bunch of water when you put in a new membrane to get rid of some preservatives. I guess that’s important, makes sense.

Why This Matters

I also stumbled upon some info about what happens if you don’t change these filters. Apparently, it can mess up your whole system, not just the taste of your water. Something about damage to the membrane and other parts if there’s too much gunk built up. Don’t want that happening.

So, there you have it. That’s how I removed the membrane from my RO filter. It wasn’t too bad, just needed a bit of patience and the right tools. Now, onto getting a new membrane and flushing the system. Wish me luck!
