Pentair Big Blue 1 Inch NPT Filter: Is This the Right Filter For You

Okay, so here’s my little adventure with the Pentair Big Blue 1-inch NPT filter.

I wanted to put in a whole-house water filter system, and after looking around, I decided to go with the Pentair Big Blue. It just looked sturdy and reliable, you know? Plus, it seemed like something I could handle myself without calling in a professional, which is always a bonus in my book.

First thing, I gathered all the stuff I needed. The filter housing itself, the model number 166219, came with 1-inch NPT inlet and outlet ports. I also picked up a pressure gauge, some mounting brackets, and all the necessary pipes and fittings. Oh, and of course, the filter cartridge! I chose a sediment filter to start with, figuring it would catch all the big junk.

Installation Time

Installation time! I shut off the main water supply to the house – very important step, don’t want any unexpected showers! Then, I picked a good spot in my basement where the filter would be accessible but out of the way. I used the mounting brackets to secure the housing to the wall, making sure it was nice and level.

Next, I connected the inlet and outlet pipes to the housing. I used that Teflon tape on all the threaded connections to make sure there were no leaks. I am not a big fan of surprise leaks. This part was a bit fiddly, but I took my time and double-checked everything.

  • Screwed in the pressure gauge.
  • Inserted the filter cartridge into the housing.
  • Tightened everything up.

Finally, with everything connected and secure, I turned the water supply back on slowly, keeping a close eye out for any leaks. I watched the pressure gauge and everything. And guess what? No leaks! I felt pretty good at this point. The pressure was good, and I could see the water running clear through the transparent housing.

It’s been a few weeks now, and the filter’s been working great. The water tastes better, and I feel better knowing that all that sediment and stuff isn’t getting into my pipes and appliances. I’m planning on swapping out the filter cartridge every few months, just to keep things running smoothly. Overall, I’m really happy with the Pentair Big Blue. It was a good project, and I learned a few things along the way!
