Replace Your 20 Big Blue Filter Cartridge: Easy Steps to Follow!

Okay, so, today I’m gonna talk about swapping out a big blue filter cartridge. It’s not rocket science, but there are a few things you gotta keep in mind.

First things first, I turned off the main water supply to my house. You don’t want water spraying everywhere when you start messing with the filter, right? Mine’s in the basement, easy to find, a big red handle.

Then, I grabbed the wrench that came with the filter housing. If you don’t have one, a regular strap wrench should do the trick. You need to loosen the housing, and it’s usually pretty tight.

  • Unscrew the housing: I placed the wrench around the housing and turned it counterclockwise. It took some elbow grease, but it eventually started to loosen.
  • Remove the old cartridge: Once the housing was off, I carefully pulled out the old, gunky cartridge. Man, it was dirty! That’s why you gotta change these things regularly.
  • Clean the housing: Before putting in the new cartridge, I gave the inside of the housing a quick rinse. Just used some water, nothing fancy. Gotta make sure there are no big dirt particles.
  • Insert the new cartridge: I popped the new, fresh cartridge into the housing. Made sure it was seated properly, all snug and secure.
  • Screw the housing back on: Then, I put the housing back onto the filter head and tightened it with the wrench. Clockwise this time. Don’t overtighten, just make sure it’s secure.

After that, I turned the water supply back on, slowly at first. Checked for any leaks around the housing. Nothing! Success!

How often do you do this?

Well, I try to change mine every few months, depending on how much water we use. Some folks say they only need to replace theirs every year, but I use them to filter my entire house’s water supply. The filter housing itself is supposed to last for years. The one I have, they say replace it after 4 or 5 years. But honestly, as long as it’s not cracked or anything, it should be fine.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it. Changing a big blue filter cartridge is a pretty straightforward DIY job. Just remember to turn off the water, use the right tools, and check for leaks afterward. You’ll have clean, filtered water in no time!
