uv filtration system for well water

uv filtration system for well water, Okay, so, the well water at my place started tasting… off. Plus, I was getting a little freaked out about, you know, stuff living in the water. So, I decided to get a UV filtration system. Here’s how the whole thing went down.

The Research Phase (aka, My Headache Begins)

First, I spent way too long online. Seriously, it’s a rabbit hole of filters, flow rates, and all sorts of things I didn’t understand. I learned the basic idea, the water goes pass ultraviolet light that zaps the bacteria, viruses, and the other tiny things that like to make us sick.

I looked at a ton of different systems. Some were just the UV lamp part, some had extra filters before the UV, some were, I don’t know, made of solid gold or something (those were way out of my budget!).

Picking the System (aka, Making a Decision, Finally!)

I ended up going with a system that had a sediment filter and a carbon filter before the UV lamp. The sediment filter, take out the bigger “chunks” (gross, I know), and the carbon filter, removes the nasty tastes and smells. The UV part, kills all the living things.

  • Sediment Filter: Gets rid of dirt, rust, and stuff.
  • Carbon Filter: Improves taste and odor.
  • UV Lamp: Kills bacteria, viruses, etc.

The Installation (aka, Calling My Handy Friend)

Let’s be real, I’m not exactly a plumber. So, I called my friend, Mark, who’s actually good at this kind of stuff. He came over, and we got to work. It involved:

  • Turning off the main water supply (very important!).
  • Finding a good spot to mount the whole system (under the sink, in my case).
  • Cutting some pipes (this made me nervous).
  • Connecting everything with fittings and making sure it was all tight (no leaks!).
  • Plugging in the UV lamp (it needs electricity, obviously).

It took us a few hours, a couple of trips to the hardware store (because we always forget something), and a few choice words, but we got it done.

Testing and (Finally!) Clean Water

We turned the water back on, slowly, and checked for leaks. Nothing! Then, we let the water run for a while to flush out the new filters. I filled up a glass, took a tentative sip… and it was good! Clean, clear, and no weird taste. Success!

The Follow-Up (aka, Maintenance is Key)

The filters need to be changed regularly. The UV lamp, I have to change it every year. But hey, it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind and not getting sick from my well water.

I’ve set reminders in my phone, so I don’t forget.

So, that’s my UV filtration system story. It was a bit of a project, but definitely worth it. Now I can drink my well water without worrying about… well, you know. If you’re thinking about getting one, I’d say do your research, pick a system that fits your needs, and don’t be afraid to ask for help with the installation!
