They use this process, ion exchange, to swap out the hard minerals for sodium. Sounds good, right? Less scale buildup, softer skin, all that.

But then I started digging into whole house filters. These seemed to be more about removing everything – sediment, chlorine, even some heavy metals. The lab report had flagged a few things beyond just hardness, so this caught my attention.

Making the Decision (and the Install!)

It was a tough call. A softener would directly tackle the hardness, but a whole house filter seemed like a more, well, whole solution. I ended up going with BOTH. Yep, I decided to double down.

I installed the whole house filter first. I went with one that had a sediment filter and a carbon filter. Plumbing it in wasn’t too bad – I’m pretty handy, but even if you’re not, a plumber could knock it out pretty quick. I found a installation kit online, which contains lots of things that I need.

Then came the water softener. This was a bit trickier. I had to figure out the right size for my house based on the water hardness and how much water we use. There are some calculators online that help with that. The softener needed a drain and a power outlet, which took a little planning. It also needs salt, so I get a huge bag of it to fill the brine tank, which is part of water softener.

The Results (So Far!)

Honestly, it’s been a huge improvement. The water feels different – way less harsh. The showerheads aren’t getting clogged up anymore. And the best part? My coffee maker seems happier. Fewer cleaning cycles, which is a win in my book.

I check those pre-filter of the whole house filtration system regularly. Change it per the instructions when I found it is time to do that. I also add salts for water softener when I saw it is running out of them.

It was definitely an investment, both time and money. But for me, having clean, soft water throughout the house was worth it.
