Whole House UV Water Sterilizer Installation: Easy DIY or Hire a Pro?

Okay, here is my sharing about installing a whole house UV water sterilizer:

So, I finally decided to get one of those UV water sterilizer things for my entire house. I’d been thinking about it for a while, you know, with all the stuff you hear about water quality these days. Better safe than sorry, right?

First, I did a little digging online to see what my options were. I ended up going with this thing called the ALTHY UVF-FS48, which is kind of the whole-house version of the UVF-FS11 I already had under my kitchen sink. They’re like family, these two. It’s an upgraded version, which, I guess, means it’s supposed to be better.

I ordered the thing, and it showed up a few days later. The box was pretty big, but not crazy heavy. Inside, there was the main unit, which is basically a stainless steel tube with some wires and a light bulb thing inside. There were also some brackets for mounting it, a power adapter, and a little instruction manual.

Next up, I had to figure out where to put this thing. You’re supposed to install it after your main water filter, but before the water heater. I ended up putting it in my basement, near where the water line comes into the house. I cleared out some space, got my tools ready, and called a friend for help holding things while I tightened the bracket.

Installation time! This is where things got a little tricky. I’m not exactly a plumber, so I took my time and followed the instructions real carefully. Basically, you have to shut off the main water supply, cut the water line, and then connect the sterilizer in between. I used some pipe cutters to make the cuts, and then some pipe fittings to connect everything up. I had to make a few trips to the hardware store to get the right fittings because of course, I didn’t have all of them.

  • Turn off the main water supply.
  • Cut the main water line.
  • Connect the UV sterilizer.
  • Turn the water back on and check for leaks.

Once everything was connected, I turned the water back on slowly and checked for leaks. Luckily, there were none! I plugged in the power adapter, and the little blue light on the unit came on, which means it’s working.

How’s it working?

To be honest, I haven’t noticed a huge difference in the taste or smell of the water. But, I feel better knowing that any nasty bacteria or viruses are getting zapped before they come out of my faucets. It’s like an extra layer of security, you know? It is said that the flow rate is 12GPM, which means it can handle a lot of water. Plus, it has a smart flow control switch thingy, which is supposed to make it more efficient. Whatever that means, it’s working well.

Overall, I’m happy with my purchase. It was a bit of a project to install, but definitely doable if you’re somewhat handy. And the peace of mind is worth it, I think. The brand is Enagua Mart Althy, or JTAPURE, they are all reliable brands. So that’s my story about getting a whole house UV water sterilizer. Hope this helps anyone else thinking about doing the same!
