Recycling and Water: Easy Tips for a Water-Wise Lifestyle?
Okay, so the other day I got to thinking about how much waste we produce, and it kinda freaked me out. I decided I needed to get serious about recycling and being smarter about water use. Here’s how I’ve been tackling it.
Getting My Recycle Bins Sorted
First things first, I dug out all the recycling bins I had stashed in the garage. Turns out I had, like, three different ones, but I wasn’t really using them properly. I spent a good hour just cleaning them out – you wouldn’t believe the junk that had accumulated in there!
Then, I printed out a little cheat sheet of what goes in each bin. Our local council has a pretty good guide online, so I just copied that. It’s got pictures and everything, which is super helpful because, let’s be honest, sometimes it’s confusing!
- Blue bin: Paper, cardboard, magazines… you know, the usual stuff.
- Yellow bin: Plastics (but only certain types, which is where the cheat sheet comes in handy!), glass bottles, and cans.
- Green bin: Garden waste. We don’t have much of a garden, but I still try to compost food scraps.
Water Works
Next up, water. I’ve always been pretty bad about letting the tap run while I brush my teeth. Guilty! So, I made a conscious effort to turn it off. It’s such a small thing, but it adds up.
I also started timing my showers. Five minutes is the goal! It’s tougher than it sounds, but I’m getting better. I even put a bucket in the shower to catch the cold water while it’s warming up. I use that water for my plants, which are surprisingly thirsty.
Recycling and WaterAnother thing I did was check for leaky faucets. I found one in the bathroom that was dripping constantly. Fixed that myself with a wrench – felt pretty handy, I must say!
It’s a Work in Progress
It’s definitely a journey, not a destination. I’m not perfect, but I’m trying. Every little bit helps, right? And honestly, it feels good to be doing something. Plus, my recycling bins are way more organized now, which is a bonus!
